The ACLU Foundation of San Diego & Imperial Counties (ACLUF-SDIC) seeks term-limited Promotorx for our El Centro Office.

A Promotorx is an essential part of the Imperial Valley Department in El Centro. There are still many community members in the region who haven’t heard about the ACLUF-SDIC.  As a result, Promotorx will play a key role in educating people and promoting ACLUF-SDIC’s civil liberties issues in Imperial County. 

The Promotorx will be a term-limited part-time employee of ACLUF-SDIC and receive ongoing training to increase their knowledge and skills, furthering their and their communities’ empowerment and community education.   

The ACLUF-SDIC is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) civil liberties and civil rights organization. working to advance equality, freedom and justice through public education and litigation.  Together with the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties, the 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization that does our legislative lobbying work, we are a prominent force for the protection and expansion of fundamental rights in California’s second-most populous county (San Diego) and the county with the highest per capita Latina/o population (Imperial).

With affiliate offices in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, the ACLU fights tirelessly in courts, in legislatures, and in communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the United States Constitution and U.S. laws to everyone in this country. The work of the ACLU Foundation of San Diego & Imperial Counties and ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties (known collectively as ACLU-SDIC) encompasses the length of California’s border with Mexico. We collaborate with the National ACLU and with ACLU affiliates in California, on the U.S-Mexico border and throughout the United States. We strive to partner with community organizations and groups across the state and throughout the binational border region.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Community Liaison, the Promotorx will be responsible for identifying and recruiting community members and organizations to educate them on our civil liberties issues and activate them to participate in our regional campaigns and programs so that they are part of the creation of transformational change in Imperial County.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

The Promotorx will assist the Imperial department team build a base of volunteers and supporters in the region who are from BIPOC communities throughout the Valley including unincorporated areas, the north end, and communities near the Arizona border.   The Promotorx will also educate and inform the community about civil liberties issues, such as lithium extraction, so that individuals, families, and their communities are better informed about what is taking place in their backyard.  This will require the Promotorx to build trust and be in constant communication with community members and organizations, local agency representatives, as well as other outside organizations. This available position aims to incorporate an enthusiastic and energetic team member that promotes community empowerment, social justice, and environmental justice to disadvantaged communities by way of education, capacity building, and civic participation.

Specifically, the Promotorx will:

  • Identify and recruit members of the public to become involved with our organization and our civil liberties programs.
  • Table at community events to provide Know Your Rights resources and information regarding lithium extraction happening in their community.   
  • Assist team by turning out our supporter base for proposed lithium projects items being discussed.
  • Drive our support base to become engaged with our lithium community partners working on lithium advocacy.
  • Assist team with civic engagement program, in coordination with community partners, and provide volunteer opportunities to participate and get out the vote.   
  • Contribute to the creation, improvement, and delivery of program materials and suggest best practices to make our materials more accessible for diverse audiences.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with agencies, institutions, and other community-based organizations by attending community meetings.

Must Haves:

  • Deep understanding of local issues, trends, and community needs in the Imperial Valley.
  • Bilingual: Spanish

Demonstrated awareness of one’s own cultural identity, views about differences, and the ability to learn and build on varying cultural and community norms. A complex understanding of racial justice and the urgency of confronting institutional racism and inequity. Commitment to equity and inclusion as organizational practice and culture. Proven track record of working across lines of race, immigration status, ethnicity, language, class, gender and other identities and experiences including record of arrest or conviction.  Courage and impeccable integrity.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to exchange accurate information, detect/identify documents and the information contained in them, move between areas in and out of the office to complete their role. The employee may need to move various equipment including computer to their work location. Promotorx will be required to table at community events and sometimes may be required to bring own table and chair.  Promotorx will have to also transport tabling materials to events.

Hybrid Working:

Promotorx will require in-office and remote work.

Travel Requirements:

Must be able to travel for community events throughout Imperial County. Mileage for work-related travel from our Imperial Valley office is reimbursable.

Compensation:

Salary Range: $20 – 25/hour; Part Time 21 hours a week
