Today, the San Diego City Council passed a resolution to support AB 392: The California Act to Save Lives. Authored by Assemblymember Shirley Weber, AB 392 is a common-sense bill that will save lives and increase safety for police officers. With this resolution, the City of San Diego sends a powerful signal to our state legislature that our communities will be safer when officers avoid the use of deadly force whenever possible. When police use tactics to de-escalate situations and decrease tensions – they save people’s lives, increase officers’ safety, and strengthen relationships with and within the communities they are sworn to protect and serve. The ACLU is a proud co-sponsor of AB 392 alongside a wide range of human and civil rights organizations throughout California. We commend Councilmember Monica Montgomery for her leadership in bringing this resolution forward and we thank the San Diego City Council for standing with the communities they represent in support of this important bill.
