Imperial County must provide voters access to all election-related materials in Spanish, as required by the federal Voting Rights Act. The Imperial County Registrar of Voters (ICROV) has failed to fully comply with its obligation under law. This failure can have a detrimental impact on Spanish-speaking voter participation in the electoral process.
The ACLU sent a letter to the ICROV regarding these language access deficiencies in May 2022. After seeing no meaningful change and receiving no response to the letter, the ACLUF-SDIC and the Asian Americans Advancing Justice sent a follow-up letter on October 31, 2022.
This letter stresses that all election-related materials and website content must be made available in Spanish. It also urges the ICROV to avoid exclusively using a translation widget for website content and ensure all links and attachments are made available in Spanish.
Access to accurately translated election information is of utmost importance. It is imperative that the Imperial County Registrar of Voters complies with its language access obligations on its website.
El Condado de Imperial debe dar a los votantes acceso a todos los materiales relacionados con las elecciones en español, como lo exige la Ley Federal de Derechos Electorales. El Registro Electoral del Condado Imperial (ICROV, por sus siglas en inglés) no ha cumplido con esta obligación legal.
